Miniature Dachshund

The Dachshund, developed in Germany, is also called the Badger dog. They are a very intelligent and fearless scent hound, using their noses to track their prey. They then dig underground to trap the prey and bark to alert the hunter above ground. Thus the BIG voice.

I'm sure the first time you heard your Dachshund bark you were a little surprised at the volume. They are not a "yappy" breed though, barking only at strange noises to alert the family that something is awry.

Although they are formidable hunters, Dachshunds are also a most loving pet always wanting to be near you or in your lap snuggling as close as possible and gazing into your eyes like you hung the moon. If allowed to sleep on your bed they will burrow under the covers no matter what the temperature in the room. They also adore laying in the sun; sometimes belly up.

Dachshunds come in a variety of coats, colors and patterns. The smooth being the wash and wear variety therefore more popular, the long hair requiring a weekly brushing and the wire hair requiring hand stripping or clipping at the grooming salon. The patterns are dapple, piebald and brindle.

There are also two sizes of Dachshund. The miniature is 11 lbs. and under, the Standard being anything over that. Most standards weigh in at around 20 pounds and are a much stronger personality than the mini. Here at HelzBelz I breed the miniature Dachshund exclusively and only smooth coats.
